First described in 1833 by entomologists Gory and Percheron, this beetle belongs to the Cetoniinae subfamily, a group known for their brilliant metallic colors. R. mellyi lives up to that reputation with a glossy exoskeleton that shimmers in shades of green, bronze, or gold, making it a standout among flower-visiting beetles.
