Platycotis vittata, commonly known as the oak treehopper, is a vividly patterned insect native to North America, especially common in the eastern United States. this member of the Membracidae family is known for its bold colors and unusual shape—many individuals sport a horn-like projection from their pronotum. Adults can vary widely in appearance, showing combinations of red, black, green, and brown stripes or spots, and their nymphs are just as striking with red, yellow, and black markings and tiny spines on their backs. These insects live on oak trees, where they feed on sap using their needle-like mouthparts and lay eggs by slicing into bark.
