Pachycoris torridus, commonly called the Torrid Jewel Bug, is a vividly colored insect native to the Americas and particularly abundant in South America. This species belongs to the Scutelleridae family and is well-known for its role as an agricultural pest, especially on plants like Jatropha curcas, a crop used in biodiesel production. The bug depicted here, a vibrant turquoise and orange, showcases one of its most stunning color variations, making it a testament to the species’ extreme color polymorphism. These wide variations in color once led to it being mistaken for several different species. Measuring around 10–15 mm, these bugs feed on plant sap and can cause significant crop damage.
