Danaus plexippus, better known as the monarch butterfly, is one of the most iconic insects in North America. Famous for their vivid orange and black wings and their epic migration—traveling up to 3,000 miles from Canada and the U.S. to overwinter in central Mexico. Their caterpillars feed only on milkweed, a plant that makes them toxic to predators, even as adults. Monarchs also play an important role as pollinators. Sadly, their populations are declining due to habitat loss and climate change, sparking global conservation efforts. Fun fact: it takes several generations of monarchs to complete the full migration—meaning the butterflies that fly to Mexico aren’t the same ones that make the return trip north!
