hiasognathus grantii, better known as Darwin's Stag Beetle, is a striking insect native to the temperate rainforests of southern Chile and Argentina. Named after Charles Darwin, who encountered it during his voyage on the HMS Beagle, this beetle is famous for its dramatic appearance—especially the males, who can reach up to 90 millimeters in length thanks to their enormous, antler-like mandibles. These mandibles aren’t just for show; males use them to wrestle and toss rivals off tree trunks during mating season. Females are smaller, typically between 25 and 40 millimeters, and lack the oversized jaws.
