The Bolborhinum tubericeps is a little-known beetle native to the soils of southern South America, particularly in Chile and Argentina. First described in the 19th century by entomologist Léon Fairmaire, this species currently has no established common name—but if it needed one, “Knobbed Burrow Beetle” might capture both its rugged form and underground habits. A member of the Geotrupidae family, this beetle is believed to thrive in loose, diggable soil where it can excavate deep vertical burrows. These burrows are often marked by small mounds of freshly turned dirt, complete with a neat circular entrance. While its exact diet hasn’t been recorded, many of its close relatives feed on underground fungi, making it likely that B. tubericeps is a mycetophagous species as well.
