The Allantus cinctus larva, commonly known as the Curled Rose Sawfly, is a caterpillar-like insect first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758. Found in gardens, hedgerows, and anywhere rose plants flourish, this little leaf-muncher is a known visitor of roses, raspberries, and strawberries. Its body is greenish-gray on top and pale underneath, covered with rows of tiny white spines, and topped with a bright orange head. Reaching up to 21 mm in length, the larva starts out by skeletonizing leaves and later devours them from the edges inward, often leaving only the veins behind. the way they chew leaves can make it look like a rose bush has been scorched by tiny fire-breathing dragons.
